UMCP KDSAP
What Is UMCP KDSAP?
The Kidney Diseases Awareness and Screening Program (KDSAP) is a national, student-run, and non-profit dedicated to raising awareness of kidney disease through health education, community outreach, and free preventative care screenings. As a student-run organization, KDSAP connects students and physicians with medically underserved communities to promote early kidney disease detection and prevention. The University of Maryland College Park (UMCP) chapter was founded in 2019 and works to serve the D.C. community. What Does KDSAP Do? The KDSAP model allows members of the chapter to integrate awareness and health screenings to combat kidney disease across the United States. Kidney disease leads to renal failure, the 8th leading cause of death in the United States. To address this problem, KDSAP holds preventative health screenings in medically underserved communities as an attempt to detect kidney disease early on, an essential step in reducing its progression and improving patient outcomes. In addition to screenings, KDSAP raises awareness of kidney disease through health education that helps community members recognize early signs of kidney disease and take proactive measures to protect their health. While serving the local community, KDSAP also provides valuable opportunities for student members to develop leadership skills, gain hands-on clinical experience, and build connections with their local community members and medical professionals. UMCP KDSAP consists of outreach and programming committees, including: 1. Health education 2. Community outreach 3. Programming 4. Fundraising Through its dual mission of education and service, KDSAP plays a crucial role in bridging healthcare disparities and promoting kidney health nationwide. |
